Sluice wheel by Tony Martin
Images are important to me. Like music, they can strike straight to the heart, to the soul, bypassing mind. When I did my week at Arvon with the wonderful Philip Hensher (where I met the even more wonderful Milla) we used images a lot to kickstart writing. So I get a huge kick out of following links, wandering down new corridors and finding beautiful pictures right out there on the walls or hiding in dark corners. I have been stingy over the years with sharing my artwork discoveries and that is going to change.

Out of the darkness

So today is just the first of what I hope will be many. I came across Tony Martin on Twitter – not sure how – one of those serendipitous links. I like his writing. I don’t always agree with him but then wouldn’t life be boring if we always agreed? Somehow I’d missed that he was a photographer too. But a chance conversation about the Dropkick Murphys this morning led me to his pages on deviantART (I do love this site).... So here’s a taster of his work...
I don’t know about you but I feel stories leaking out of so many of these, just waiting to be told...

The Eye

The City
Prehistoric
Alien seed

Ah, glad you like them, Frankie. :) Somehow, I'm not surprised...

But really, it's best to go to the deviantART site - they don't reproduce so well here and I am not clever at fiddling with size.

How often has a picture or object triggered a story? I used to do that all the time with the children. Pick up a piece of driftwood on the beach and then spin some story about Africa and it holding up a house and a pet pig rubbing against it and it was a pet pig because it only had 3 legs and that was why it leaned against the post to stop it falling over but it got so big with all the scraps, it being a pet, that the post broke under its weight and the family threw the wood into the sea. Look closely! I think you can even see one of the pig's bristles. Just here, look. They called it Henry, by the way, the pig, after the king. Pigs are always called after kings - unless they are in Beatrix Potter, when they're called Alexander, who wasn't a king but a Tsar.... cont'd p94

No wonder my poor children are confused.......

about a year or 18 months ago there was a blog running called stories without words. (http://storieswithoutwords.wordpress.com ) which invited writers and poets to put together story poetry and other writing about some amazing pictures Roka Walsh found, often from famouse photographers she persuaded to allow to use their work. I had a lot of funa nd made some good friends but in the end the effort and the stress of doing it became too much for Roka. The blog occasionally posts still.
Images often do inspire and these you have shared must surely tell stories as remarkable as the pics.
